Cini Minis….YUM

Last Thursday (yes I know a few days behind here) I was getting ready to make some breakfast for my boys. I had a spare can of crescent rolls hanging around, because I always keep a some in the fridge. They are handy little buggers to keep around. Anyhoo, I was wanting to make them something fun and yummy so I found this pin from a few weeks back and thought it fit the bill: http://iowagirleats.com/2011/11/23/8-minute-mini-cinnamon-rolls/

I started out with my crescent rolls like so: Image

I pinched the seems together and rolled them out a bit then sprinkled with cinnamon to cover the dough like this: Image

Then spread some delicious brown sugar around like so: Image

I then began to roll my cinnamon rolls. Every time I do a recipe like this with crescent rolls where I have to pinch the seems together and roll them into one sheet of dough I get this problem:Image

I cannot tell you how much this INFURIATES me! I don’t know why but I get irrationally angry at that stupid dough. I can tell you it didn’t affect the taste at all…

Prepare  your mini muffin tins by spraying them with cooking spray so they don’t stick. Cut your roll with a sharp knife and place them in the muffins tins like this:Image

Mine made 16 small cinnamon rolls. Bake them according to the directions on the crescent package. While they are baking prepare an icing of powdered sugar and milk. I didn’t make the maple icing from the original pin because it didn’t sound great to me. I made a couple batches of the stuff trying to get the right consistency. I will tell you that you need a TINY amount of milk and a LARGE amount of powdered sugar. Like maybe 1 tsp of milk to 1/4 cup powdered sugar. Just keep mixing in the sugar until you get a thicker icing.

Put your icing in a ziplock bag, cut a teeny tiny hole in the corner and drizzle over your rolls and ENJOY!Image

They were delicious. My picky nine year old took one bite and deemed then uneatable, but the rest of the family enjoyed them. They were even good cold.

SLACKER

I know, I know, one Pin a day(ish) right? I have been doing them, just not documenting them for lack of time. I have been a busy girl with the 4th of July and painting the house. 

I want to tell you about one recipe that I made for the 4th. It was OMG to die for dip. Here is the original pin: http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/appetizers-and-snacks/jene28099s-mexicorn-dip/

I guess it comes under many names, cowboy caviar is what I called it, but by the end of the night it was called the $hit dip because it was, well, the $hit. It was seriously the best appetizer/dip I’ve ever made. We had it with just plain tortilla chips and it was great. I added a couple more green onions and a small bunch of cilantro, because cilantro makes everything better. Even my picky 9 year old loved it. There was none left, it didn’t even make it to fireworks time. 

Ingredients:

2 cans mexi corn, drained

1 can original Rotell

4 oz can diced green chilis

2 whole diced jalapenos, seeds removed

1 red bell pepper

5 green onions 

8 oz shredded Mexican cheese blend

1 small bunch of cilantro

1 cup mayo

1 cup sour cream

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, enjoy with tortilla chips or Fritos.

I have made this before, but it was much better the second time around. We grilled it this time and I think that made the difference. The brown sugar really caramelized and and made it much better. 

I only took a few pics because I was being a little lazy. Here is the chicken after being seasoned.

I used a pretty generous portion of chili powder on both sides of the chicken tenders and just a dusting of garlic powder on one side. I then added some fresh ground pepper and sea salt and wrapped them in thick cut pepper bacon  and rolled them in a generous amount of brown sugar. I then placed toothpicks in the bacon so it wouldn’t fall off on the grill. Here are the little beauties cooking:

Notice the two plain chicken tenders up there, that’s for the picky eater. He’ll eat jalapenos but not bacon…not sure who’s kid he is.

They were delish. Served them with some grilled vegis and instant potatoes. This is a recipe that I will make again and again. Its so great.

Ingredients:

4 chicken breasts, cut in thirds

12 pieces thick cut pepper bacon

Chili powder

garlic powder

about 2 cups loosely packed brown sugar in small baking dish

salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Cut thawed chicken breasts into tenders. Arrange on a dish and cover with chili powder on both sides and garlic powder on one side, or both is you don’t plan on making out anytime soon. Wrap tenders in bacon then roll the whole thing with a generous coating of brown sugar. Secure bacon with toothpicks on each end if grilling, no need if baking. 

Grill and enjoy.

If baking, bake at 400 for 30-40 minutes until chicken is cooked thru. 

Red, White, and Blue rice krispie treats.

Happy almost 4th of July. What better way to celebrate the fourth than with some gooey, delicious rice krispie treats. Here is my inspiration pin: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sweetheartcupcake/5902982478/in/photostream, just the picture, no how to.

Obviously everyone knows how to make rice krispie treats, but in case you don’t, here is the recipe: 

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows
  • – OR –
  • 4 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal

I doubled mine so it looked like this: 

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 2 packages regular marshmallows or 8 cups mini marshmallows
  • 12 cups Rice Krispies 

Then I cut it into thirds to make the layers, like so:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • About 7 cups
  • 4 cups cereal 

I make mine in the microwave rather than on the stove, melt the butter and about 7 cups of the marshmallows on high for about 90 seconds stir until smooth and add food coloring like so: Image

I added a GENEROUS amount of food coloring because I didn’t want to end up with pink, white, and teal rice krispies.

I started with the red layer, followed by the white, and the blue:

I let them cool in the fridge for a couple hours, cut, removed from the pan and VIOLA!!:

And darn if one wouldn’t fit on the plate so I had to eat it. Ok two! Have a safe 4th of July my friends.

T-Shirt redesign

Let me start by saying I don’t sew. I have a sewing machine and I know the general idea of how to use it but I’m no good at it. So when I saw this pin: http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/tshirt_shrug I thought, sure that’s cute, for someone else to do.

Well since I started this blog I decided I may as well challenge myself a little but and decided to tackle this one head on. I started with this old brown t-shirt that I haven’t worn in a long time: Image

Following the directions I cut the neckband off and made a cut down the middle of the shirt like this: Image

I then folded the shirt down about an inch all the way around and pinned it and it was ready to sew. I took a picture of this pins but it didn’t turn out so use your imagination : )

This is the main reason I don’t sew, I don’t know how to stop this from happening: Image

Grrr…this very frustrating. After this one little mishap though the rest went ok. I ended up with this: Image

You’ll notice it’s not exactly even, or sewn in a straight line even but I figured it would be gathered so it really didn’t matter. I was correct, you can’t tell in the finished product. 

I took a very long piece of matching ribbon and pinned a safety pin to the end to feed it through my sewn area, I’m sure there is a technical sewing term for it but I don’t know it. Image

Threading the ribbon took longer than the actual sewing because I had to use that tiny safety pin because it was the only one I could find. But here it is!! SO CUTE: Image

I’m very happy with how this turned out, although there are few small areas that could be improved. I might have to go find a couple thrift store t-shirts and make a few more. I think I will be cutting the ribbon a little so the tie isn’t so long and probably putting a little dart in it so it doesn’t fall out when I wash it. 

If you have been thinking about doing this but aren’t a great sewer like me, don’t worry, there is a lot of room for error in this project because its so gathered. I’m wearing mine right now to the grocery store. Happy Monday everyone!!

 

OMG Curtain rod as a picture hanger!

I’m sure if you are a pinner you have seen this super cute idea. Who knew curtain rods had so many other uses besides, well holding curtains. This is my inspiration pin: http://thelemondsfamily.blogspot.com/2012/02/this-is-my-inspiration-and-i-got-it.html, and it appears she got her inspiration from some where else but same idea. 

I have been wanting something to do with the ugly, empty hall way wall since we moved in to this house 6 years ago. Here’s the wall before: Image

Let me start by saying that I don’t actually HAVE the pictures printed for the frames that I bought to do this project with yet, but hopefully by Monday I will! 

So I started with this ugly old curtain rod that has been in my broom closet of all places for about 5 years. I don’t even know where it came from, it didn’t have the hangers for it and it was a hideous bronzey color.

Like my painting surface? The remnants of another project my husband has been working on. More on that another day…I painted the curtain rod satin black. I have found when spray painting, don’t buy the cheapest paint you can find because it really is one of those things that is worth the extra couple bucks. I only had to use one coat of this paint and now I have plenty for another project later on.

I didn’t do any prep on the curtain rod other than to clean five years worth of broom closet dust off of it and begin painting. 

In the original pin I didn’t see anything on how to affix the rod to the wall so I made up my own. I purchased these “mug hooks” at Walmart for 97 cents. Only used two and have two more for later.

Also I didn’t see how the other pinner affixed the ribbon to her frames so I imagined this is how it must have been done: Image

I used about 45 inches of ribbon, and made the ends pretty like this:

ImageSince I’m not allowed to touch the power tools in the house the hubs did the drilling, putting dry wall anchors in the wall and then screwing the hooks into those:

I SO LOVE the way this turned out. The entire project cost me about $10. $3.47 for the paint, $2.50 for the ribbon on sale at Michael’s, and $3.00 for the frames at the dollar store. I chose inexpensive frames because they are light and I didn’t want too much weight on the rod without them being anchored into studs. It took me most of the day to complete because it was humid today (47% humidity according to weather bug, yes this is humid for Spokane) and it took a long time for the spray paint to dry. While I was waiting for it to dry I had time to do this:

Post number one!!

Ok, so some of you said “do it” so I’m doing it. This is my Pinterest project a day(ish) blog. I love Pinterest, I pin all day long, food, crafts, funny stuff, silly stuff, all stuff!! I love the idea of reusing/repurposing/making the old new and all that. That is how this blog has come to be.

So as my project for the day I wasn’t yet sure if the blog was going to happen, so forgive that I don’t have step by steps for this project. And tomorrow I’m seeing Magic Mike, so it’s quite possible I’m going to be out of commission tomorrow because of hot man over load. 

Here is my inspiration for today’s pin: http://fashionlushxx.com/diy-colored-soles/. Two things you should know about me is that I LOVE shoes, and I LOVE nail polish…this pin combines two of my most favorite things, shoes and nail polish so I knew I was going to do this one as soon as I pinned it. 

I used an old pair of shoes because I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out. I’m not always confident in my abilities as a crafter/repurposer so I went with shoes that weren’t in my usual rotation. Now that I know how CUTE it really is, and how easy I will definitely be doing it on a pair I wear more often.

Ultimately I LOVE the way these turned out. I don’t wear them very often, but I think they may make into the regular rotation with the sassy new hot pink soles. Some things I will do differently the next time I do it. 1. Use a thicker polish. I used a Sally Hansen Extreme Wear polish for this, one that I had on hand and next time I will select a less expensive, thicker polish to use. 2. I will wait until the white base coat dries, like the tutorial suggests. I got anxious and put my color on too soon so I had to use three coats when I probably could have used two if I had followed the directions. 3. I won’t use shoes that have leather on the heels, but rather ones that have plastic. The leather was hard to cover and the polish doesn’t stick as well to it. 

So here it is, my post number one. I hope you enjoy. I will be posting success and failures here, I have no secrets. If something turns out bad, I will share that with you too! : ) Thanks for the support. I’m looking forward to this. Should be fun!
